Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for a dog or cat costs roughly $150 to $400 per session. Courses typically run three to ten sessions, so a full protocol is commonly $600 to $3,000, often on top of the treatment for the underlying condition.
The pet is placed in a sealed chamber, which is pressurised to roughly one and a half to three times normal atmospheric pressure while delivering pure oxygen. A session lasts 45 to 90 minutes including compression and decompression, and most animals sleep through it.
The physiology is not in dispute
Under normal conditions, nearly all oxygen in the blood is carried by haemoglobin in red cells, which are close to fully loaded already. Breathing more oxygen at normal pressure adds very little.
Raise the pressure and something different happens: oxygen dissolves directly into the plasma, which can carry many times its usual amount. That plasma reaches tissue where blood supply is poor and where red cells struggle to go — a swollen surgical flap, a crushed limb, infected tissue with a compromised blood supply.
The described effects follow from that: better oxygen delivery to poorly perfused tissue, reduced swelling from vasoconstriction that does not reduce oxygen delivery, direct toxicity to anaerobic bacteria, improved white cell killing, and stimulation of new blood vessel growth.
This is well-established physiology, not a fringe claim. And in human medicine there is a defined list of indications with good supporting evidence.
The veterinary evidence is thinner, and you should know that
Here is where an honest page differs from a facility's own.
Most veterinary support is case series, retrospective reports and extrapolation from human medicine. Controlled trials in dogs and cats are few. That is not evidence of absence — it reflects how little funding veterinary research attracts — but it does mean the appropriate posture is measured rather than enthusiastic.
What this should change about your decision:
- Ask what specifically it is expected to achieve, for your pet's condition, and over how many sessions. A clear answer is a good sign.
- Ask what "better" would look like and when you would see it.
- Be wary of an open-ended course. Three to ten sessions with a defined goal is a plan. "Come back weekly and we'll see" is not.
- Treat it as an adjunct. It supplements surgery, antibiotics, wound care and intensive care. It replaces none of them.
Where it is most used
The strongest veterinary applications, roughly in order of how well supported they are:
- Compromised wounds, flaps and grafts — tissue with a marginal blood supply that is at risk of dying. This is the clearest use.
- Necrotising soft tissue infections, including anaerobic infections where raised oxygen is directly hostile to the organism.
- Crush injuries and degloving wounds after trauma.
- Carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation — a well-established human indication that transfers directly.
- Snake envenomation, in some protocols.
- Post-surgical swelling, particularly after extensive reconstructive surgery.
- Selected neurological and spinal cases, where the evidence is weakest and enthusiasm is often greatest.
Safety, and why the rules are strict
This deserves proper treatment rather than reassurance.
A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurised, oxygen-enriched enclosed space, and oxygen under pressure makes anything flammable dramatically more so. A fatal veterinary chamber fire, caused by a static discharge, is the reason the protocols are what they are.
So before a pet goes in:
- Ointments, creams, bandages and collars come off. Petroleum-based products are a fire risk.
- Nothing metal, nothing plastic that can generate static. Pets are often grounded and sometimes wiped down.
- No toys, blankets or personal items from home.
- Trained staff monitor throughout, and the chamber is never left unattended.
If a facility is casual about any of this, go elsewhere. The treatment is safe in a properly run chamber — the protocol is what makes it safe, and it is not optional.
Absolute contraindications: untreated pneumothorax, which is the classic one — trapped air in the chest expands as pressure changes. Also upper airway obstruction, an inability to equalise middle ear pressure, uncontrolled seizures, fever, and recent middle-ear or chest surgery. Certain chemotherapy agents, notably doxorubicin, bleomycin and cisplatin, have described interactions.
Side effects are usually mild — ear discomfort during pressure changes, occasional anxiety in the chamber. Oxygen toxicity and barotrauma are rare with correct protocols.
Is it worth it?
If your pet has a flap or graft at risk of failing, a necrotising infection, or carbon monoxide exposure, the rationale is strong and the treatment is worth asking about.
If it is being offered as a general adjunct for a chronic condition with no defined endpoint, ask harder questions before committing to a course. And check with your insurer — coverage is inconsistent, and many policies decline it as investigational.
Who isn't a candidate
