CT Scan

A CT scan for a dog or cat costs roughly $900 to $2,500, including the sedation or anaesthetic, the scan itself, contrast where used, and a radiologist's report.

The most common question is not what it costs. It is why your vet recommended this rather than an MRI.

CT or MRI — the short answer

They are not competing versions of the same test. They answer different questions.

CT is a rotating x-ray beam reconstructed by computer into cross-sectional slices. It is fast — a scan takes minutes — and it is unmatched for bone, lungs, sinuses, and surgical planning.

MRI uses a magnetic field and is far better at distinguishing one soft tissue from another. It is the test for brain and spinal cord.

So, roughly:

  • Seizures, sudden weakness, suspected disc disease, a wobbly gait → MRI
  • A lung mass, a complex fracture, a nasal problem, cancer staging, planning an abdominal surgery → CT

A CT of a dog with brain disease can come back looking confidently normal while the problem sits there unseen. If you are told your pet needs imaging of the brain or spinal cord and CT is proposed, it is fair to ask why — sometimes there is a good reason, such as looking for a skull fracture or when MRI is genuinely unavailable.

CT is also cheaper, quicker, and much better tolerated by patients that struggle with a long anaesthetic.

What a CT is good at

  • Chest. Far more sensitive than radiographs for lung nodules. This is why cancer staging increasingly means a CT rather than three x-ray views.
  • Complex fractures. Pelvis, skull, joints — surgeons plan repairs from CT reconstructions.
  • Nose and sinuses. Chronic nasal discharge, nosebleeds, suspected tumours.
  • Ears. Middle-ear disease and whether the bone is involved.
  • Abdomen. Adrenal masses, liver masses and their relationship to major vessels — the finding that decides whether a surgery is feasible at all.
  • Vascular studies. Portosystemic shunts, tumour thrombus in the vena cava.
  • Radiation planning. Modern radiotherapy is planned on a CT.

Does my pet need anaesthesia?

Almost always, and the reason is simply that the patient must be completely still.

The good news is that this is a short anaesthetic. Modern multi-slice scanners acquire in seconds to a couple of minutes; the anaesthetic is often shorter than for a dental cleaning. Some cooperative patients are managed with sedation alone in a positioning cradle.

Compare that with MRI, which takes thirty to ninety minutes of anaesthesia — a real advantage of CT for older or higher-risk patients.

Contrast

Many scans include an intravenous iodinated contrast agent, which lights up blood vessels and highlights tissue with an abnormal blood supply.

It is what turns "there is a mass" into "the mass involves this vessel, so this is the operation." Reactions are uncommon. In pets with existing kidney disease it is used more carefully — with intravenous fluids and a considered plan rather than as routine — so tell your vet about any known kidney problem.

What the day looks like

Admission in the morning, a pre-anaesthetic examination and often bloodwork, then a catheter placed. The scan itself is quick, contrast given partway through where indicated. Most patients are awake within minutes of ending and go home the same afternoon.

Reporting varies. Some centres give preliminary findings the same day with a full radiologist's report in one to three days.

Is it worth it?

The honest framing: a CT is expensive, and it is worth it when the result changes what happens next.

It is clearly worth it when the answer decides whether to operate, where to cut, whether cancer has spread, or whether a treatment is justified.

It is worth questioning when nobody can tell you what they would do differently with the result. Ask directly: "What will you do differently depending on what this shows?" A good clinician will have a clear answer, and if they do not, that is a useful conversation rather than an awkward one.

Also ask whether the scan is reported by a board-certified radiologist. Acquiring the images and interpreting them are different skills, and at many centres the second is done remotely by a specialist.

Who isn't a candidate

  • Concurrent condition: Anything that makes sedation or a brief general anaesthetic unsafe — the patient has to be completely still, so most pets are anaesthetised even though the scan itself takes minutes.
  • Concurrent condition: Existing kidney disease or dehydration where iodinated contrast is planned; contrast is often still possible, but with fluids and a plan rather than by default.
  • Other: Known contrast reaction in a previous study.
  • Other: Soft-tissue questions inside the brain and spinal cord, where MRI is the better test and a CT will produce a confidently normal-looking scan of a real problem.

How much does a CT scan cost for a dog?

Regional variation is wide and a specialist referral centre generally costs more than a general practice with a scanner. Cats tolerate the short scan well. Where iodinated contrast is used and the cat has known kidney disease, it is given with fluids and a considered plan rather than routinely.
