I’ve taken both my (mother’s) dog and my pet snake to CSU vet. They are kind, compassionate, and thorough. They educated me on proper husbandry without judgement and demonstrated how to give my snake antibiotic shots. My snake is happy and thriving in her new habitat. She’s alive and well thanks to CSU vet. I wish I could personally thank the doctors that helped us… she has a new lease on life.

My experience with CSU Veterinary Hospital has been mixed. On the one hand, the team is clearly knowledgeable and handles a large volume of complex cases. That level of expertise is reassuring when your pet has serious medical needs. However, the biggest challenge is the lack of continuity because you do not have a consistent veterinarian or student working with you, which can make communication difficult. My dachshund was recently seen for a swallow study and was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis, among other conditions. The vet we saw that day, Dr. Rush, along with student Laura Mena, was absolutely outstanding. Dr. Rush was timely and thorough in her communication, calling to explain the results and following up with emails. Laura took the time to truly understand my dog’s symptoms and history. She listened, took notes, and confirmed details to ensure nothing was missed. If we could see those two every visit, I would feel incredibly confident in our care. The challenges started once Dr. Rush went off rotation. I was told a resident would be my ongoing contact, but communication quickly became inconsistent. Essential questions about my dog’s diagnosis went unanswered, and email, while helpful at times, did not offer the clarity that a conversation would have. I still have outstanding questions, which ultimately prompted me to find an internal medicine doctor closer to home for more dependable guidance. A few weeks later, my dog experienced an emergency and was admitted through the ER at CSU. She also has inflammatory bowel disease and a very strict diet. Despite CSU having her records, along with detailed written instructions from me about her food and medications, she was fed the wrong diet in the hospital. Even after an ER doctor consulted with internal medicine, no one realized the food they discussed was not the food she was actually receiving. She requires Royal Canin HP Low Fat, but was given Royal Canin Gastrointestinal instead. Upon dropping her off, I offered to leave her food to ensure she would eat the food she requires to manage her IBD. However, they told me it was not necessary. There were also inconsistencies regarding visitation. When I left my dog, a student assured me that I could come back and visit at any time. Later that night, while on the phone with the vet, I let her know I planned to be there at 6 a.m. The vet then informed me I would need an appointment to visit, and that visitation was limited to one hour. It was frustrating to hear two entirely different guidelines within the same day, especially during an already stressful situation. When she was discharged, she came home with diarrhea. It could have been due to stress, but it was still upsetting given the effort made to communicate her dietary needs. Again, the turnover in students and doctors likely contributed to the miscommunication. Overall, CSU is an excellent institution for advanced diagnostics and the treatment of complex conditions. The team’s knowledge and capability are undeniable. But if you value consistent communication or building a continuous relationship with your veterinarian, that is an area where CSU struggles. I am grateful for the expertise they provided, but there are definitely opportunities for improvement in coordination and continuity of care.

The most wonderful experience we could have had in a scary time. Everyone was so wonderful and kind. We’ve been trying to figure out what was going on with our dog for several days. We had seen and talked to multiple vets and were feeling very invalidated and unheard with our concerns for our dog. It finally got to a point where she needed to be seen ASAP. From the very beginning all of the staff members were so absolutely wonderful the front desk people who check you in and answer the phones were so kind and helpful. The student helping us I believe her name was Lily was so nice and actually listened to all of our concerns and validated our need to get her help. The doctor was wonderful as well willing to come check in with us himself and very personable. Everyone was so helpful to our sweet dog who was in a lot of stress and discomfort. Anyone who was working in the evening/ early morning on December 27th was absolutely amazing! Very transparent about costs and were willing to work with what we needed for our girl but also willing to be reasonable with treatment due to cost. We were brought so much peace and our dog is no longer struggling and she is back home happy and feeling better. So thankful for Shawna as well she spoke with us on the phone and was also there helping in person and was so compassionate and wonderful to us and our pup.

We have been treating our two Samoyed’s dry eyes for the last year with another eye specialist, with no great results. The expertise, care and knowledge from the CSU Vet students Robin and Eric, the resident Vet, Dr Angela and faculty Dr. Kathryn was spectacular! We have seen great improvements in our dogs with one visit! We have Hope are so grateful for the team at CSU! ❤️💙🐾🐾

We had to take our sweet girl dog in to be euthanized around 10 pm. I had called a bit earlier to see if they did euthanization and they were extremely helpful and sympathetic on the phone. She had been in end stage liver failure for about a month and tanked that evening. When my husband carried her in (a st Bernard mix) they took her right away due to the condition she was in. Tomi Belczik was our Dr. We saw only one other pet parent there consulting with him in another room as we were headed to the "comfort room" and as we were leaving without our sweet girl we had brought in I saw this woman in EXTREME distress. I didn't realize it then in my own grief but Dr Tomi must have had a very difficult night in his own job. But he still handled us with the utmost compassion and composure, obviously before or after, I'm not sure, having to deliver very bad news to another client. I think this shows considerable empathy and professionalism in the emergent care department of the csu veterinary clinic.
