Is my ferret having a seizure an emergency?

What to do right now

  1. Rub a little honey or corn syrup on the gums (first aid for a low-blood-sugar seizure).
  2. Do not restrain your ferret or put anything near its mouth; cushion it from injury.
  3. Note when the seizure started and how long it lasts.
  4. Keep your ferret warm and quiet afterwards and get to an emergency or exotic vet.

Yes — a seizure in a ferret is an emergency. The most common cause is a severe low-blood-sugar crisis from insulinoma, and others include poisoning, heatstroke, and brain disease. If your ferret is fitting, twitching, or unresponsive, rub a little honey or corn syrup on its gums (this can rapidly help a low-sugar seizure), keep it safe from injury, and get to an emergency or exotic vet immediately.

## What a ferret seizure looks like The ferret may tremble, twitch, paddle, drool, stiffen, or lie unresponsive with rapid movements. A low-blood-sugar seizure is often preceded by weakness, a glazed stare, and drooling.

## Why low blood sugar is the top suspect Insulinoma — a common pancreatic tumour in ferrets over about three years — drops blood sugar so low the brain can't function, which triggers seizures. Because this cause is both common and quickly helped by raising blood sugar, honey on the gums is worthwhile first aid. Poisoning (see the poisoning guidance) and heatstroke are other important causes.

## Keeping your ferret safe Do not restrain a seizing ferret or put your fingers near its mouth. Move hard objects away, cushion it, and dim the lights. Once it passes, keep the ferret warm and quiet and go to the vet — even if honey seemed to bring it round, the underlying insulinoma or other cause still needs treatment.

Common questions

Why does honey help a seizing ferret?

If the seizure is caused by low blood sugar (insulinoma), a small amount of honey or corn syrup rubbed on the gums raises blood sugar quickly and can help. It's first aid, though — the ferret still needs a vet to treat the underlying cause.

My ferret had a brief fit and recovered — still an emergency?

Yes. Even a single seizure needs investigation, and insulinoma episodes recur and worsen. Have your ferret seen promptly for diagnosis and treatment.

What if I don't have honey?

Corn syrup, maple syrup, or another sugary syrup works too — a small smear on the gums. Don't pour liquid into the mouth of a seizing or unconscious ferret; then get to the vet.
